Three ways to work with the centre. All of them are voluntary, in both directions — we charge nothing, and we pay nothing.

Junior student research fellowship

The main route into the centre, and the reason it exists. It is aimed at undergraduates in their first three years — earlier than most programmes will take you, which is the point.

Who should apply

  • Life sciences, biotechnology, genetic engineering and biochemistry
  • Computer science, software engineering and data science
  • Medicine, public health, pharmacy and allied health sciences
  • Geography, environmental science and statistics

What you will do

  • Work with a supervisor one-to-one in one of the four research groups.
  • Run a real project — form the hypothesis, do the analysis, interpret the result.
  • Learn to write it up: literature review, figures, manuscript drafting, and the peer review process end to end.
  • Take the training in Linux, R, Python, Nextflow, machine learning and GIS as the project requires it.

What we expect

Consistency more than brilliance. Projects run over months and the most common reason one fails is that a student disappears in week six, not that the analysis was too hard.

How to apply

Email us with a short statement of what you want to work on and why, your year and discipline, and a CV if you have one. There is no form and no deadline pressure — we read them as they arrive.

Apply as a junior fellow

Eligibility
University students in years 1–3, any relevant discipline.
Prior experience
None required. Training is provided.
Cost
None. We do not charge fees.
Stipend
None. The centre is entirely voluntary.
Location
Hybrid and online — GitHub, Slack or Discord, and Google Meet — so students outside Dhaka can take part.
Commitment
Months, not weeks. Projects run to publication.

Volunteer mentors and research leads

If you are a graduate student, postdoctoral fellow, academic or industry data scientist, a few hours a week from you supports a team of students who would otherwise have no supervision at all.

What mentoring involves

  • Guiding a team of two to four undergraduates on one focused project.
  • A periodic check-in and code review — usually fortnightly.
  • Supervising manuscript preparation, and co-authoring where you have contributed.

You do not need to be in Bangladesh, and you do not need to commit beyond one project cycle.

We work with laboratories, research centres, hospitals and non-profits, contributing multi-omics analysis, predictive modelling, geospatial work and methodology for joint studies and grant proposals.

Before you write to us

Do I need to be able to code?

No. The foundation courses assume nothing. What matters is curiosity and turning up consistently.

Is it remote or in person?

Mostly remote, via GitHub, chat and video calls, so students at universities across Bangladesh can take part.

Is there a fee or a stipend?

Neither. Participation costs nothing and pays nothing. We measure ourselves in publications and in where our alumni end up.

Will I actually be an author?

If you do the work, yes — including first authorship. See our publications.
